A CabinPulse Alternative That Needs No Outlet
CabinPulse (sometimes written Cabin Pulse), made in Saskatchewan by Toccata Systems, is a plug-in cellular monitor for cabins and cottages. MaxLinc EDGE Cellular, made in Vancouver, BC, does the same job with no WiFi needed (it also works on WiFi), runs on 4 AA batteries so it can go anywhere, and phones everyone on your list when a reading crosses your limit. The EDGE Essential Cellular costs $361 CAD over three years and $433 CAD over five, against $559 CAD and $895 CAD for CabinPulse at its cheapest prepaid terms.

Which cellular EDGE fits your cottage?
No WiFi needed on any EDGE Cellular model, and each one also works on WiFi. Pick what you want to watch.
When CabinPulse Is the Better Pick
Power outages are your main worry
CabinPulse is built around the outlet: it plugs in, watches the power and, by its own account, keeps reporting on its backup battery for two to three days. EDGE Cellular reports a power cut when it runs on USB-C power, at its next recording, by push, email and text. If outage alerts matter more to you than anything else, CabinPulse is designed for exactly that.
You want air quality in the same box
CabinPulse measures CO2 and VOCs alongside temperature and humidity. At MaxLinc, air quality is a separate model, EDGE Air.
You want every text included
CabinPulse’s plan includes unlimited text, email and push alerts. On EDGE, email and push are always free, but texts and calls draw on prepaid alert credit, with about $3.70 included with every device.
You want several wireless add-on sensors
One CabinPulse takes up to 10 wireless add-on sensors, such as its leak and second-room sensors. EDGE uses wired probes and a dry-contact input instead.
Where EDGE Cellular fits better
For freeze protection in a crawl space, a pump house or a closed-up cottage with no outlet where you need it, EDGE runs on its own 4 AA batteries. When a reading crosses your limit, it phones, texts, emails and pushes everyone on your list at once, and sounds its buzzer on site. It also works on WiFi and comes with a 2-year warranty. It also costs less to own: $361 CAD over three years and $433 CAD over five, against $559 CAD and $895 CAD for CabinPulse.
EDGE also has an e-ink screen that shows the reading on the device itself, so whoever is at the cottage can check it at a glance, no phone needed. Below 0 °C (32 °F) the screen stops updating and says so, but logging and alarms carry on.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is EDGE Cellular cheaper than CabinPulse?+
Over three or five years, yes. The EDGE Essential Cellular is $289 CAD with its first year of service included, then $36 CAD a year, billed annually: $361 CAD over three years and $433 CAD over five. CabinPulse is $199 CAD plus a required prepaid plan, $168 CAD for one year or $360 CAD for three: $559 CAD over three years and $895 CAD over five at its cheapest mix of terms ($703 CAD and $1,039 CAD on 1-year terms). All in Canadian dollars, before tax and shipping. CabinPulse prices checked on cabinpulse.com on October 14, 2026.
Does EDGE Cellular need WiFi at the cottage?+
No. It has cellular built in and connects on its own out of the box, with nothing to pair and no WiFi password. It also works on WiFi if the cottage has it. CabinPulse is cellular only.
Which one tells me when the power goes out?+
CabinPulse plugs into an outlet, reports power outages and lists a backup battery good for two to three days. EDGE Cellular reports a power cut when it runs on USB-C power: at its next recording, by push, email and text, to everyone the device is shared with. A WiFi sensor of any brand can only alert while your router has power and internet, so put the router on a UPS.
Will EDGE phone me if the cottage gets too cold?+
Yes. When a reading crosses your limit, the alarm goes to everyone the device is shared with at the same time, by phone call, text, email and push, each person on the channels turned on in their own profile. Email and push are always free; texts and calls use prepaid alert credit, and every device includes about $3.70 of it. Power-cut notices go by push, email and text.
Are both made in Canada?+
Yes. CabinPulse says it is made in Saskatchewan and ships from Saskatoon. EDGE is designed and built in Vancouver, BC, and ships within Canada, so a Canadian order never goes through customs.
Can I add a water leak sensor?+
Yes. Every EDGE except EDGE Essential PLUS has a dry-contact input for the Flood Detector Kit: 3 m (10 ft) of leak-sensing cable, and one run can reach 100 m (330 ft) with extensions. Or choose EDGE Essential Flood Cellular, which watches for leaks plus room temperature and humidity. CabinPulse sells a Leak Sensor add-on for $59 CAD.
What does the plan cover from year two?+
The cellular data connection, the cloud app with Premium (full history, advanced reports and sharing) and the alerts. It is billed annually, $36 CAD a year, with no contract, and the first year is included with the device.
