EDGE Thermo WiFi is a freezer monitor and a fridge alarm in one: its two probes, temperature sensors on cables, go inside, each with its own high and low limits. When a reading crosses a limit, it calls, texts, emails and sends a push to everyone you share it with, and its buzzer sounds on the spot.
Chest freezer: where the probe goes
Put the probe in the middle of the load, about halfway down, tucked between packages or resting in a basket, not touching the walls. The walls are the coldest part of most chest freezers, so a probe against one reads colder than your food. Run the cable under the lid seal and check that the lid still closes tight.
Upright freezer or fridge: where the probe goes
Use a middle shelf, toward the centre, away from the door shelves and the cold-air vent. The door shelves warm up every time the door opens and the vent blows the coldest air, so neither tells you what your food is doing. Run the cable through the door seal and check that the door still closes tight.
Fridge alarm and freezer alarm, each with its own limits
One probe goes in the fridge, the other in the freezer, and each has its own high and low limits, so the fridge alarm and the freezer alarm never share a setting. For reference, Health Canada recommends a fridge at 4 °C (40 °F) or lower and a freezer at -18 °C (0 °F) or lower.
Alert delay: no false alarms from the door
In the web app, Alarm Trigger Delay sets how long a reading has to stay out of range before anyone is alerted. Choose Immediately to hear about the first bad reading, or a delay such as 15 minutes, so putting groceries away or a defrost cycle stays quiet while a freezer that keeps warming up still sets off the alarm. The delay applies to too warm and too cold alike.

What do phone calls and texts cost?
Email and push alerts are free and unlimited. Texts and calls run on prepaid alert credit. Your device comes with about $3.70 of credit, enough for 250 texts or 100 calls. After that a text is about 1.5¢ and a call about 3.7¢ (a text and a call to 4 people: about 21¢), and you top up anytime from your profile. If the credit ever runs out, email and push alerts keep going.
Will it alert me in a power outage?
It keeps logging every reading on its 4 AA batteries through an outage, and its buzzer still sounds on site; the readings upload when the WiFi is back. A WiFi unit can only alert while your router has power and internet (put the router on a UPS). For outage alerts, choose a Cellular model on USB-C power: it reports a power cut at its next recording, by push, email and text. For this model, that is EDGE Thermo Cellular.
How many people can get the alarm?
As many as you want: your partner, your staff, the neighbour (on WiFi, adding new people after the first year needs Premium; everyone already on the list stays). Everyone gets the call or text at once, the alerts repeat until the reading is back in range, and the log shows who acknowledged it.
